Design Observer (http://designobserver.com/archives/entry.html?id=30467)has a really great review of MM season 1 that focuses on the advertising and pitch aspects of the show. And guess what? They provide a linkback to Basket of Kisses.

I know what you mean. I’m watching the commentary because I’m invested in the characters and the show in general. If I really liked a scene, or feel an actor nailed it, I want to hear about that.

Sometimes, and not talking about MM specifically, the scene will be one that moved me and the actors will be laughing and joking, and it can cheapen things.

Or the commentary has someone who speaks very narrowly about their interest and inadvertently derails the more general discussion.

Even though I know it’s part of their evul plan to make me buy the superhipandcool DVD set, I LOVE when marketers take over a whole train. It’s amazing.

Dan, I don’t believe Don saved that business card. He burned the photo of him and Adam, and that was emotional for him; surely he would dispose of something unemotional.

Harry, it’s a thought, except that Larry lives in the Boston area, but that could be worked around.

I have a unified theory on DVD commentaries:

The interesting ones concern themselves with either broad character/series themes, or interesting minutia (e.g. “this line coming up really shows the character in a nutshell,” or “see that prop in the background? it was the actor’s original bicycle from when he was a kid.”

But when a director or dp goes on about how s/he likes to block scenes or dedicates 3 scenes of the episode to the weekly script/shooting schedule, it gets infuriating.

On a couple of episodes they do that with MM (not naming names, ahem) - I’m sitting there like, “talk about the scene, already!!!”.

Interesting possible mistake. In the commentary for Hobo Code, Bryan Batt points out that one of the guys in the art department is from My Three Sons, and that’s correct — Barry Livingston (bald man with glasses) was Ernie. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0515225/

However, on the commentary for The Wheel Jon Hamm states that Peggy’s office mate was on My Three Sons as one of the sons, and that does not appear to be the case. He is credited as Jonathan Spencer: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0817990/

I think it’s possible but in a way it’s too easy a story line or predictable rather, and as we all know Mad Men is everything but.

It’s possible that somewhere into season 2 Sterling and cooper have an account with IBM? Which obviously would bring up tension as the old friend would be calling Don Dick. I don’t know I’m just spitballing but maybe we won’t see the old friend/character from the train again and maybe it was just Weiner saying “although Don has moved on there are still people out there who know him as Dick he has no control over them”. This show is so hard to second guess

It’s still fun to try it though!

Had a brief moment of clarity while watching MoF on DVD … when the guy on the train recognizes Dick Whitman he gives Don his IBM business card.

I believe Mr. Weiner has hinted that while the central mystery of Don’s identity will not be the focus in S2, the two “characters” of Don and Dick will play a major role in what goes on. “Don Draper’s doing great. Dick Whitman isn’t,” or something to that effect.

Is it plausible that, still tortured by Adam’s suicide and with no family or any other links to his past, Don reaches out to the IBM guy in some way?
